We live in a culture obsessed with self- definition, self-fulfillment, and the pursuit of self-esteem. In this lecture, through the history of ideas and the rise of modern psychology, we trace the roots of western culture’s ‘inward turn’. We expose the harms, as well as the potential benefits, of today’s absorption with the self. And finally, we explore how the Christian Gospel points to a better story of human flourishing.

The past two years have been tremendously challenging churches. The pandemic has expedited the decline of the church in UK with some denominations facing extinction. At the same time evangelical churches are slowly growing. What is the current state of British evangelicalism and what are the prospects for the next decade? We will consider issues of theology, identity, unity, diversity, and mission.
